Nature preserve safe for now

Yellowknife (Sep 01/06) - Three lots considered for rezoning and residential development in the Kam Lake area will remain a nature preserve, for now.

Monday evening, city council voted to direct administrators not proceed with the development of the lots, located south of Hordal Road.

In July, the city's municipal services committee debated the merits of three plans calling for between eight and 30 manufactured homes to be built on the site.

Since then, the city issued a call to developers and, according to the lands and planning division, administrators received four proposals.

Councillor Alan Woytuik, who had been a vocal supporter of rezoning the property, was one of four members who did not participate in Monday's vote, citing a conflict of interest.

Councillor Doug Witty, also a supporter of developing the land, voted against putting things on hold. Blake Lyons, Kevin O'Reilly and Mark Heyck supported the moratorium.
