Report needs re-write for clarity

Yellowknife (Sep 15/06) - Give it to us in plain language, says the territorial government about its own annual report on the diamond industry.

Published by the industry department since 1999 under agreements with mining companies BHP Billiton, Diavik and DeBeers, the Communities and Diamonds Report compares various trends in communities affected by diamond mining.

Impacts on Behchoko, Gameti, Whati, Wekweeti, Detah, N'Dilo, Lutsel K'e and Yellowknife are examined in the report. Now, the government has put out a request for proposals to have the report re-written.

"We are beginning to compile the 2006 version and (officials) decided they'd like to make it a little bit more understandable, simpler," said Drew Williams, spokesperson for the department. He called the language as "very government."

"In a lot of cases, particularly for community governments, you have people trying to get through this document in a second language."

The territorial government was unable to provide the cost of producing the report or the projected cost of having it re-written.
