Race for mayor in Fort Smith

Fort Smith (Sep 11/06) - Unlike three years ago, there will be a race for the mayor's chair here in October's municipal elections.

Janie Hobart has decided to challenge incumbent Peter Martselos, who has held the post for nine years. Other possible candidates have until Sept. 11 to put their names forward.

Martselos, who was acclaimed to the position in 2003, said he still has a desire to work for Fort Smith.

"I still love the community and the people," he said.

Martselos said he wants to oversee a major upgrading of the town's water and sewer system planned for next year and extensive paving scheduled for 2008.

Plus, he wants to continue pushing the GNWT to chipseal all of Highway 5, which he believes would boost tourism to the community. "This is a priority to me."

Before becoming mayor, 58-year-old Martselos served as a councillor for 12 years.

Hobart, 50, has lived in Fort Smith for 24 years and works as a clerk at the RCMP detachment.

She was executive secretary for the Town of Fort Smith between 1995-98, and has been involved in a number of community committees over the years, including those which successfully promoted a new pool and a recreation centre.

"I feel if you have concerns, you should be ready to step up and solve them," said Hobart, who has never before run for public office. She would like to see more planning in the community.

"I think it's important to know where you're going and have a vision for the future," she said.

Both Hobart and Martselos agree an election is a good thing as it gives residents a choice and encourages discussion of issues.
