Yellowknife (Aug 18/06) - Police said they have identified some suspects connected to the fire that destroyed four portable classrooms and a mini-gym at St. Joseph School on Aug. 3.

But they refuse to say how many people they're looking for or when arrests will be made.

"All are youth under 18," said RCMP Const. Colleen Werrell.

NWT Fire Marshal Bernie Van Tighem was also tight-lipped about the case, declining to comment on the cause of the Aug. 3 fire or whether accelerants were used.

"We're still investigating," said Van Tighem.

According to the fire department, the blaze started underneath one of the portables, which were connected to the school via corridors and a hallway.

When fire got into the walls and floor, firefighters concentrated their efforts on stopping the flames from spreading to the rest of the school.

Yellowknife Catholic Schools superintendent Kern Von Hagen told media he suspected arson immediately because of where the fire started.
