Inuvik (Jul 07/06) - Another group of Inuvialuit youth will embark on an unforgettable expedition down the Horton River.

Amanda Cliff is working for the Inuvialuit Development Corporation. IDC is sponsoring the trip.

"The expedition is aimed to give the youth some leadership skills to bring back to their communities," said Cliff.

Cliff, who has been on the past two trips, will not be accompanying the youth on their 15-day canoe trip.

The leadership expedition will start in Inuvik, where the youth will meet, and travel out to the river by plane.

Once they are out at the river, the group will paddle through areas that Cliff describes as "exciting and beautiful."

"Paddling through canyons, and into the calm waters is great," said Cliff.

The trip is designed to be much more than just another trip on the land though. The youth will learn from each other and be faced with the elements.

The Smoking Hills near Paulatuk will also be visited, giving the students a chance to hike.

"It's a good way for the youth to test themselves too," said Cliff.

Last year, the group was welcomed back with a feast and presentation of commemorative paddles.

"There won't be any paddles this year but there will be something good for them," said Cliff.

The 2005 group also went on a tour of Norterra companies owned by Inuvialuit Development Corporation through partnerships. This year's group will also be touring the same companies.

"Last year we went to Edmonton and Hay River," said Cliff. "This year will be the same."

But Cliff will be missing out on all the fun on the land.

"From what I can compare the Horton River to, it's one of the most beautiful rivers in Canada."
