School strategic plan not good enough: trustee

Yellowknife (Jul 05/06) - A Yk District No.1 trustee is saying the school board's strategic plan is not good enough.

The board has neglected to seek the input and opinions of parents and the community, said Terry Brookes, who was the only trustee to vote against the plan during a board meeting last month.

"Not having sought the opinions of parents goes against my personal philosophy," he said.

The plan outlines specific goals the board hopes to achieve on literacy, aboriginal culture and special needs, during its four-year term which is up in four months.

Brookes said the plan is an important document that will likely not get a chance to be implemented until the next board is established. He said he voted against passing the strategic plan because he felt it could have been better and it could have used more input from outside the board.

Parent Association Committee chairs he spoke to didn't know about the document, he said.

Metro Huculak, Yk No.1 superintendent of education, said they did consult parents, but it was important to get the document passed.

"It is a living document," Huculak says. "It isn't complete, it never will be."

He said now that it is passed, they can give the document to parents and get feedback.
