Yellowknife (July 28/06) - Five men have died on the Dempster Highway and one man is in the Inuvik hospital after a car crash July 24.

The men were driving southbound on the Dempster highway, about 400 metres from the NWT/Yukon border.

It is not known what caused the crash.

Police discovered their red minivan upside-down near an embankment around 8:20 p.m. Monday night.

Sgt. Dan Gaudet, of the Dawson City RCMP, said two officers from Fort McPherson were the first on the scene.

They were later joined by two RCMP officers from Inuvik.

"I'm not even going to speculate on a cause right now," said Gaudet.

Gaudet said the five dead men were visiting from the greater Toronto area, while the injured man is from Whitehorse.

The extent of the man's injuries have not been released, but he is believed to be in stable condition.
