Yellowknife (July 28/06) - The RCMP is preparing to step up its traffic enforcement effort in August with a focus on speeding.

"It's a contributing factor with a lot of our rural collisions, especially," said Const. Sheldon Robb in Hay River.

The extra patrols and radar locations will target Highways 1 and 3 around Yellowknife.

Robb said about 17 per cent of fatal accidents involve speeding drivers, according to Canadian crash statistics.

Missing boater found

A 28-year-old man was reported missing Wednesday morning, but was found shortly after.

The man's boat got caught on a reef near the fish plant.

The man was helped by workers at the facility on Yellowknife Bay, said police.

Three youths, all 17 and male, were charged with breaking and entering the Yellowknife golf course July 20.

The incident happened at about 1:30 a.m.

Officers responded to the alarm and used the police dog to track the youth to a vehicle on Hwy. 3.

An RCMP spokesperson would not comment on whether anything was stolen.

Stealing liquor

Two men were charged with stealing from a downtown club Tuesday evening around 7:30 p.m.

The men, ages 39 and 40, were caught when a witness told police they were running away.

The men were found with a white bucket containing five bottles of liquor.
