Fort Simpson (July 21/06) - After almost a year without one, the Fort Simpson region now has a new regional superintendent of transportation.

Michel Lafrance started the position on June 13. The job involves overseeing the marine, highway and airport operations in the area.

Lafrance is open in admitting that his real strength lies with aviation and not highways or marine operations.

Since 1981 Lafrance has managed a series of airports starting in Iqaluit. He spent time at a number of airports in Quebec including Baie-Comeau, Sept-Iles and Kuujjuaq. For the past four years he was the airport manager in Yellowknife.

The move from airports to a broader range of transportation was motivated by a feeling of having accomplished his goals in Yellowknife, he said. Also, Lafrance noted he's always had an indirect link to marine operations. Living in small, remote communities near the water all supplies came on boats.

Lafrance said he's approaching the new position with a willingness to learn and strong managerial skills.

"In a sense it's just expanding my horizons," he said.

The strong support he's received in the office has also helped.

"They're going to mentor me into the job," said Lafrance.

Lafrance has spent his first month meeting employees and becoming familiar with the scope of operations.

Having spent a lot of time in the North, Lafrance said he appreciates the freedom and the nature offered around the community.

"I like the region because I like to canoe," he said. "I'm happy to be here."
