Yellowknife (Jun 09/06) - Two men, aged 20 and 22, were assaulted by approximately six men near the Explorer Hotel May 30.

The incident happened between 9 p.m. and 9:40 p.m.

Police said the victims' injuries were "quite severe" and both men were taken to hospital in an ambulance.

There are no suspects at this time.

Nightclub owner foils break-in

One of the owners of the White Fox, a downtown nightclub, foiled a break-in.

The co-owner managed to apprehend one suspect in the early hours of May 29. A man, 23, was caught.

A second unidentified person involved in the break and enter ran away.

The suspect was released June 2 and is scheduled to be in court Aug. 1.

The break and enter was one among three that happened in the city between May 29 and June 5.

Woman charged with possession of cocaine

A 23-year-old woman was charged with possession of cocaine after giving a false name to police during a vehicle check May 31.

Police discovered cocaine and drug paraphernalia during a subsequent search of the vehicle. There was no word on the amount of cocaine found.

Const. Colleen Werrell said the woman is well-known to police.

Stealing liquor

Three men were charged with shoplifting after alcohol, or products containing alcohol, were stolen in unrelated incidents.

A 37-year-old man was charged with stealing two bottles of vodka from the downtown liquor store Saturday.

A 68-year-old man has been charged with theft in connection with a Sunday shoplifting incident in which two bottles of vanilla extract were stolen from a store.

A second man, 31, was also charged for stealing alcohol from the same liquor store May 31.

Nunchucks destroyed

A 20-year-old man travelling out of Yellowknife was stopped in the airport after nunchucks were found in his luggage May 31.

Nunchucks are used in martial arts and are considered a dangerous weapon and are illegal in Canada, say police.

Though the man explained the nunchucks were not real and considered practice nunchucks, airport officials still seized the weapon and destroyed it.

Bike viewing set

Police hope to have a June bike viewing for members of the public who have had their bikes stolen.

There are currently 83 bikes in police custody that have been found as of Monday.

If the bikes are not claimed, Const. Colleen Werrell said the bikes will be donated to the Rotary Club of Yellowknife.
