Fort Resolution (Jun 05/06) - People in Fort Resolution rushed to the rescue when an elder was trapped under a car after being hit while walking along the road.

According to the RCMP, the rescuers lifted the vehicle off the 58-year-old man, who was hit about 4:50 p.m. on May 28.

Witnesses and occupants of nearby homes came to the aid of the victim, who has been identified by police as Leonard Beaulieu Sr.

One of the rescuers was Alan Mandeville, 21.

"The first thing I thought was to get the car off him," Mandeville says.

The victim was under the back end of the car on the driver's side and an arm was under a tire, Mandeville says.

"His whole body was under the car. Just his legs were sticking out."

Seven males lifted the car, a Dodge Neon, and someone pulled the victim out from underneath.

"Before we knew it, the car was off the ground," Mandeville notes.

"I think it was just adrenaline."

It is unclear how the victim ended up under the car.

Mandeville speculates the man may have slid along the side of the vehicle after being hit, before rolling underneath.

Mandeville says some people were screaming and crying as the man was being rescued. "It was really a bad scene, especially for the kids who saw it."

The group who lifted the car were "pretty big and strong guys," he says, adding he had no doubt they could lift it.

Nurses, community members and the RCMP assisted in stabilizing the victim, who was transported to the local clinic and eventually medevaced to Yellowknife and then to Edmonton.

According to police, he is listed in serious but stable condition. An 18-year-old female driver has been charged under the Motor Vehicle Act for driving without due care and attention.

She will make her first court appearance on June 26 to enter a plea. RCMP are still investigating the accident.
