Yellowknife (Jun 05/06) - The body of 26-year-old Richard Apples of Behchoko was found by friends and family last Tuesday evening in the Marian River, said RCMP.

The river is about 30 km from the Tlicho community.

The RCMP, including a police dog and helicopters, worked with community members with boats to search for Apples after his canoe tipped over May 16. That search was called off three days later. Members from the community continued the search, finding Apples' body on May 30.

Apples' niece, Nicole Apples, said the family was "pretty upset" about the trapper's death.

Carmen Apples, another of Richard's nieces, said she remembers his visits and how he always helped out his grandmother.

Carmen said the funeral was scheduled to take place at the St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church on Friday.

She said she expected between 50 and 100 people to attend.

Apples and another man were headed to a campsite on Shoti Lake May 16, when their four-metre canvass canoe flipped over in harsh weather.

The other man in the canoe made it to shore safely.

Divers were called to help find Apples' body, but could not aid in the search because of hazardous water conditions.

Police did not release the names of who found the body or the exact location it was found.
