Yellowknife (Jun 28/06) - Police arrested 98 people over the weekend, most for public drunkenness. Forty-one of those were on Friday during the Raven Mad Daze celebrations.

The arrests came as RCMP and Municipal Enforcement officers, assisted by Citizens on Patrol volunteers, enforced a "zero tolerance policy" during the festivities.

About 36 per cent of the people arrested were from out of town.

The arrests were made in the downtown area for any and all infractions, said RCMP Const. Colleen Werrell, who noted police wanted to ensure people could enjoy Friday night's festivities peacefully.

A heartfelt surprise thank you

The RCMP were surprised by a visit Monday morning from a woman rescued from her burning apartment by four officers last August.

Peggy DiGeorgio, 58, was caught in the Anderson Thompson Towers Aug. 29, 2005 after candles started a fire in her apartment.

She visited the detachment to thank two of the four officers involved in her rescue, Const. Dave Hamilton and Const. Keith Kowalchuk. Const. Brent Lackie and Const. Sean Gordon were also involved in the rescue, but have since left Yellowknife.

"It was the single most personally gratifying experience I've had," said Hamilton, describing the meeting with DiGeorgio.

According to police, she said she would not have been able to make the visit without their diligence and caring.

DiGeorgio was severely burned in the fire. She now lives in B.C. and declined an invitation to meet the media.

The Yellowknife Fire Department was delayed in responding to the call because phone lines were out when lightning struck a transmitter near Enterprise.

Only five bikes claimed

Only five bikes out of 100 recovered by police were claimed during a Saturday viewing.

Between 15 and 20 people showed up to look at the stolen bikes the police have either found or had dropped off at the station.

Const. Colleen Werrell said there seemed to be more stolen bikes this year as compared to last year.

Another bike viewing may be held in the fall, if enough bikes are collected.

The rest of the bikes were donated to the Rotary Club of Yellowknife for its fundraiser bike auction.

Two break and enters

Sometime during the night of June 22 and the morning of June 23, someone broke into the Yellowknife Golf Club's liquor storage area.

Police did not release what was stolen or how much it was worth and say they have no suspects.

In a separate case, stolen food from the downtown Extra Foods Monday morning was found outside the store in some bushes.

The case is still under investigation, but police believe three youths were involved.

No arrests were made as of Monday.
