Yellowknife (Jun 23/06) - With only a few classes left before the end of year, Sheree McLeod rubs hard on a table top before declaring it's finished.

Being creative with wood is something that comes easily to the Grade 10 student.

In junior high, McLeod worked on projects like a small end table, and a model Jeep truck no bigger than a microwave.

"Woodworking is my favourite class," said McLeod.

As her final project this semester, the 15-year-old tackled the construction of a table.

Shop teacher John Lord provided the plans and kept McLeod busy for a few months.

"I really like building things and being creative at the same time," said McLeod.

But while varnishing the table, the eager carpenter got bored and started a side project.

"I went on the Internet and looked-up designs for some moveable dolls," explained McLeod.

The idea came from other dolls with movable arms and legs that she had seen.

Once again, Lord stepped in, showing her the way to making her vision a reality.

"We were on the Internet and she got a base idea for the marionette," said Lord. "Mostly, it was her design."

The doll, about a foot long, sits with pegs holding it together. Lord said the building phase of the first doll was a long process because McLeod needed the perfect shape.

"She would just toss out torsos and arms that looked fine to me," he said.

Once the doll was completed, McLeod thought of a new design - one that would require a roll of yarn.

"I saw an old doll with holes drilled all over its head, so I figured it would work for me too," said McLeod.

A few strands of yarn were used for the doll's hair and the doll's face was painted by McLeod, as well.

Her instructor enjoyed the look that she gave to the bust.

"It's great, I like the style of face she used," said Lord.

What will McLeod do now that she has completed her projects for the year?

"I'm bringing them home and thinking about next year," she said with a grin.
