Yellowknife (Jun 21/06) - People in Yellowknife want an indoor soccer field, more space for arts and a better library.
They also want new tennis courts, better groomed sports fields, a larger pool and new boards at the Yellowknife Community Arena.
This is what was reported in a survey commissioned by the city, which asked the public which facilities they felt were lacking.
When asked what Yellowknife's priorities should be over the next five years, respondents chose an indoor sports field, followed by gymnasium space, an indoor track, an outdoor skateboard park and a pottery studio.
A new library was also considered a priority for the next 10 years. Respondents said the library's service was excellent, but its location in Centre Square Mall could be improved upon.
On June 15, the survey's results were showcased at City Hall for the public to visit and discuss. The exhibit included tentative plans for a fieldhouse.
Plans include space for indoor soccer, an indoor walking or running track, athletic equipment and outdoor space for performances.
Bob Kussy, a children's soccer coach, said he is impressed with the plan and hopes it will soon become a reality.
He called the indoor soccer field "long overdue," because leagues use gyms which are too small for soccer.
"In the last five years, we've gained some assurance we will have an (indoor) soccer field," he said. "If this is not built, it will be a breach of trust, because the perception they would build it was there."
Larry Adamson of the Yellowknife Arts Festival Society said he appreciates the plans for extra outdoor performance space near Somba K'e park. "I am glad the city is doing this," he said. "They have to build something, because it's too valuable a space."
