Road flooded near Snare

Northern News Services

Yellowknife (Jun 19/06) - High water has overflowed a service road along the Snare River hydro system, but the supply of electricity to Yellowknife, Behchoko and Dettah is not in jeopardy.

"Power generation is not affected," said Randy Patrick, director of hydro operations with the NWT Power Corporation.

The roughly 50-foot washout occurred late Thursday at Snare Forks, about 25 km north of Behchoko. The road is on the side of a reservoir above the last of four power plants on the river.

On Friday, a geotechnical specialist, power corporation staff and regulators flew to the site to assess the situation and recommend repair options.

Patrick said water is flowing into the bush, and back into the river on the other side of the power plant.

Water levels in the river are about two to three feet above normal.
