Inuvik (Jun 19/06) - In memory of her late father who died of cancer, Carol Norwegian plans to raise money for research every five years.
Norwegian recently completed a 125 km walk from Tsiigehtchic to Inuvik.
"We had some breezy weather on the walk, which kept us cool," said Norwegian, who made the trek with her mother and her partner.
"My mom walked with me, and when she got tired, her partner would take over for a bit," she said.
The walk spanned five days, with roughly 25 km being hiked per session.
"I had a camper trailer that I slept in. We made camp in two locations," explained Norwegian.
When she arrived in Inuvik for a post-walk celebration, Norwegian announced that she would make the walk every five years.
"My father passed away from colorectal cancer five years ago," said Norwegian.
Norwegian hopes that more fundraising or research initiatives will stem from her trek.
"I really hope people will start talking more about colorectal cancer, a lot of men don't like to talk about it," she said.
On her walk, Norwegian got support form passers-by.
"It was great, I raised $782.00 on the highway from people who stopped to talk," said the mother of five.
In Yellowknife before the walk, she collected $1,400, and that fund grew by $1,000 donations received in Inuvik before the trip.
The last stretch of the highway walk proved to be very demanding for Norwegian.
"It got challenging, because I had walked so much that day, but wanted enough energy to celebrate with people in Inuvik," she said.
