Fire ban in Fort Smith

Northern News Services

Yellowknife (May 08/06) - Fire ban in Fort SmithFort Smith imposed a fire ban on May 1 due to extremely dry conditions.

Mayor Peter Martselos says the ban covers all open fires until further notice, including campfires, burning garbage and barbecues, except gas barbecues.

The ban is partially the result of an April 29 grass fire that destroyed three sheds.

Meanwhile, the RCMP say an arson charge will be laid as a result of the fire. RCMP Sgt. Craig Seafoot had originally described the fire as accidentally caused by a tossed cigarette.

Further investigation revealed it to be a "reckless" act, he says. "It was deliberately set."
