'Fireball' to hit Fort Smith

Fort Smith (May 08/06) - Fort Smith is going back to the roots of rock 'n roll for a fundraising concert June 17.

The concert and dance will feature George Tomsco and The Canadian Fireballs Tribute Band. Tomsco is an original member of the Fireballs, which formed in New Mexico in 1958.

The Fireballs are best known for their number one hit "Sugar Shack" and the Top 10 song "Bottle of Wine," both from the 1960s.

Mayor Peter Martselos, who is organizing the concert, says it would have been too costly for the town to get the Fireballs, but it could afford the tribute band. Tomsco is still a member of the Fireballs, but plays guitar and sings with tribute bands around the world.

"For me, it works very well," Martselos says, noting Fort Smith will get to see and hear the lead singer of the Fireballs.

Martselos says people may not remember the name of the band, but do remember the music. "As soon as you say the songs, people know right away," he says.

The fundraiser will also benefit cancer research, renovations at St. John's Anglican Church, the travel club at Paul William Kaeser high school and other causes.

The concert and dance will cost the town "absolutely nothing," he says, noting sponsors are helping with expenses. Proceeds from the event will cover the rest of the costs, while leaving some money to donate. The concert is planned for the Fort Smith Centennial Arena, which will be set up for 1,200 people.

Martselos is confident the event will be a success, predicting people will come from Hay River and Yellowknife.

"Definitely, it's going to be sold out," he says.
