Styles are her specialty

Fort Simpson (May 05/06) - Styling hair is something that has always interested Corrine Lindsay, and now she shares her talent with her clients.

Lindsay said her interest in hairstyling was piqued in high school, when she made the decision to enrol in post-secondary classes.

"I knew then that I was going to be a hairstylist," said Lindsay.

At first it seemed that the hunt for schools that specialized in hair education would be hard to find.

Lindsay soon found out that many schools were available throughout the country.

Lindsay chose the Style Academy, located in Edmonton, Alta.

"The school is located just off Whyte Ave., so it was always busy around there," said Lindsay.

After a year attending classes, and learning about new techniques, Lindsay was offered a job as a stylist back home in Inuvik.

"I got a call from a salon in Inuvik, about four months before my classes were done. I said yes right away," said Lindsay.

Shear Delight is one of the two salons in town, and is where Lindsay found happiness.

"It's been a great experience," said Lindsay.

"I have regular clients, and I enjoy the people I work with."

In March, Lindsay got a call from her apprenticeship officer, informing her of a competition in Yellowknife.

Lindsay signed up for the annual Skills Canada competition, which took place during the last week of April.

"I was the first apprentice hairstylist from Inuvik, and I wanted to test my skills against the rest of the Territories," said Lindsay.

The judges gave her some constructive criticism, and told her that she has a good eye for detail.

Now that she has returned from the trip, Lindsay says she plans on finishing her apprenticing hours at Shear Delight, helping others realize their true hair potential.

"I like seeing the smiles on my clients faces," said Lindsay.

"I definitely like the challenge."

The "up-do" style is her favourite, and has become more popular in the spring season.

"It's a good time of year. A lot of graduations, weddings and other planned events keep us busy here," said Lindsay.
