Yellowknife (May 05/06) - Drama, music and visual design were on display at St. Patrick high school last week.

St. Pat's annual Fine Arts night was a chance for students to flex their creative muscles through art, poetry, singing, acting, directing and music. The night featured the St. Pat's concert band, two student-directed plays ("Shooting of Dan McGrew," directed by Lindsay Rocher, and "Out West," directed by Paige McIntosh), a series of singers and a visual art display.

For those arriving late (apologetic reporters included), the night closed with a series of solo performers and the Pride of the Irish Jazz Band. One performer, Stephen Underhay, sang and played two Dallas Green (of Alexisonfire fame) songs.

Later, he said he was a member of The Tennis Court Oath, a local act he said has been playing out a lot recently.

The jazz band finished off the night with a number of tight, energetic tunes, including unexpected additions like The Doors' "Light my Fire" and Black Sabbath's "Iron Man," which drew a rowdy cheer from the audience.

Organizer Marianne Maltby said band teacher Scott Roos had a profound effect on the band since coming to St. Pat's in September.

"When he first came the band played O Canada, and it was unrecognizable," she said.

"I find it's hard work combined with enthusiasm," Roos said of the band's turn-around.

"We just have a good group this year that wants to perform in public," he said. "That makes my job a lot easier."
