Cocaine, cash seized

Yellowknife (May 03/06) - Cocaine and cash were seized early Tuesday from a mobile home many nearby residents have long complained is a drug house.

Police received a complaint of an altercation to a Trails End residence shortly after midnight Monday.

According to RCMP Sgt. Darcy Fleury, officers detected the scent of marijuana when they entered the home.

A 37-year-old man was arrested outside the residence and a man and a woman were found hiding inside. According to police, a 39-year-old man arrested inside the house was unlawfully at large after his parole was revoked, while the woman, 21, was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

Police returned with a search warrant at about 2 a.m. With help from the police dog, they found 22 grams of marijuana, 105 grams of cocaine, a police scanner, as well as a "significant amount of cash." In addition, a large amount of another substance has been sent out for further tests to determine what it is.

Last week, Yellowknifer received an e-mail complaining about drug dealing in the neighbourhood, located just off 43rd St.

Last summer, someone posted signs outside Trails End warning people that residents were aware of drug dealing in the neighbourhood and were monitoring suspicious activity.

According to the e-mail, residents have called police dozens of times during the past three years about what they consider a "crack house."

"In the past month, five neighbouring residences have had strung-out individuals gain or attempt to gain entry into their homes while they were home," said the e-mail.

"Last week, an RCMP dispatcher asked us if we'd considered moving, since we called her so much about the place."

Fleury confirmed this isn't the first time police have been at the home.

"We've had dealings with this place before," he said.

Residents won't comment on the record out of fear of retribution.

According to the e-mail, on one night alone last week, 15 vehicles visited the home.

There have been reports that residents have been intimidated and children who live in the neighbourhood followed to school.

The 37-year-old man has been charged with possession of cannabis, possession for the purpose of trafficking, proceeds of property obtained by crime and possession of telecommunications equipment. The woman was charged with possession of cannabis and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

No drug charges are pending against the 39-year-old man.

No names were released by press time.
