Time for kids to speak out

Norman Wells (May 01/06) - When you have something worth saying, then say it.

Students at Mackenzie Mountain school in Norman Wells had plenty to say at their annual public speaking contest, April 28.

Since 1999, all students from kindergarten to Grade 9 have been required to speak publicly as part of the language arts program, said Wanda Quigg, program support teacher at the school.

Of course, the wee ones in kindergarten won't be expected to deliver a dissertation on a complex subject.

Instead, they must do a short rhyme or poem.

From Grade 4 and up, entrants must present a speech at least two minutes long. Grade 4 and 5 students can also opt for a poem.

"Past topics have ranged from 'Proud Canadians,' to 'How the pencil was created,'" Quigg said.

"Poems have included 'Jack & Jill' and 'The Cremation of Sam McGee.'"

There's an in-class drill for medals.

Those top-three finishers advance to a public forum for bigger prizes.

Parents are encouraged to coach their children on topic choice and presentation.

As well, teachers will set aside class time so students can practise for the big day.
