Inuvik (May 19/06) - Eric Church makes it a point to see that his students stay fit, and he has been recognized by the community for it.
The 29-year-old teaches physical education at Samuel Hearne secondary school.
Church is a recipient of the 2006 Active Living Award from the Territorial Recreation and Parks Association.
The award is given to organizations or individuals who demonstrate a commitment to active living or health promotion in their community.
The Town of Inuvik nominated him for the award because of his determination towards a goal of healthier living in the community.
Church had no idea he was nominated for the award.
"I was stunned when I got the phone call last week," he said with a laugh.
Church has been active in extra-curricular activities outside regular school hours as well. He has been involved with the SHSS volleyball teams, as well as the new high school squash team.
"I don't do these things for the attention," he said. "I think it's great that someone in Inuvik got this award."
This is Church's fourth year teaching in Inuvik, which was a choice that was easy for him. "I had always wanted to come North and see some uncharted territory," said Church.
"But so far, Inuvik is as far North as I have been."
Church has been busy as of late with upcoming athletic projects.
"We have a group of athletes gearing up for an upcoming track meet," he explained.
The territorial track meet is held annually in Hay River and is attended by more than 1,200 competitors.
