Inuvik (May 12/06) - The Inuvik victim's services office just held an open house information session for people in the community.

Carrie Lauder, one of the program co-ordinators at the office, said the open house was well-received.

"People may feel that there is no place to go, but that's not true," said Lauder.

Sara Smith is the other co-ordinator at the office who is available to talk with victims of crime or tragedy.

"We are a good source of information for victims," said Lauder.

The office helps victims of crime enrol with the National Parole Board, which gives them information about their assailant.

"They can know when the person is going to be released, as well as other information to keep them in the loop," said Lauder.

Referring victims to the proper authorities is another service offered at the office.

Lauder said court preparations, as well as court accompaniment, are options available to people.

The office opened in December 2001 under the territorial Department of Justice.

"They are our primary funding source," said Lauder.

Recently, staff at the office observed National Victims of Crime Awareness week.

"We sent out flyers, and we had a lunchtime display at the Northmart," said Lauder.
