Yellowknife (May 10/06) - Police are on the lookout for an $800 baby stroller that disappeared last week - the second expensive kid-carrier stolen within the last two weeks.

The stroller, a red-trimmed Chariot Cougar, is specially designed for jogging and biking. It comes with handle-bar mounted brakes, two water bottles, a bike hitch, cargo rack and removable bed, according to the company's website.

The high-performance baby-hauler was taken from a home on Hamilton Drive May 3, RCMP Const. Colleen Werrell said.

Police found a similar model last week in the Somba K'e Park near downtown Yellowknife. It was determined to have been stolen.

Suspect arrested for store clerk attack

Police arrested a suspected shoplifter last week after a grocer was punched and scratched during a melee.

An intoxicated woman entered the Extra Foods on Old Airport Road and, according to police, tried to make off with a basketful of food.

When she was confronted by the store manager, police say the woman became upset and attacked the man. The 30-year-old woman also tussled with police.

Giant mine homes ransacked

Police have several suspects following a series of break-ins in homes at the mostly abandoned Giant mine townsite.

Five houses were broken into and vandalized on May 1 and again on May 5, Werrell said. In some cases, doors were kicked in and windows smashed, though the culprits managed to get into one house by clipping a thin wire holding the door closed.

The townsite was once home to a thriving population of gold miners and their families.

While the police have suspects, no arrests had been made as of Monday afternoon.

Man falls asleep in someone else's apartment

A drunk man who stumbled into someone's else apartment and fell asleep on the sofa was arrested last week, but will not face criminal charges.

It appears as though the trespassing napper was "confused" when he ambled into the ground-floor apartment in downtown Yellowknife May 4, Werrell said.

The rightful apartment dweller found the man asleep and called police, but declined to press charges.

The suspect spent the night in police custody and was released the next morning.
