First year celebration

Inuvik (Apr 07/06) - The Inuvik Family Centre celebrated its one year anniversary on Sunday to the sounds of splashes.

The festivities started at 1 p.m. and continued with various swimming programs throughout the day.

"This is a safe, friendly environment for the whole family," said Bobby Despres, the supervisor of the centre.

The centre offers recreational services, like squash courts, a play room, and a four lane lap pool complete with water slide.

"We offer these services to keep people healthy," said Despres.

Despres remembered the first weeks of operation in April 2005, and how the centre has made a difference in the community.

"When we first opened, we had kids who had never experienced the deep end before," said Despres. "Now we have numerous strong swimmers here."

One of the more beneficial programs offered at the centre is the bronze cross program which gives youth the experience and skills to become lifeguards for the pool.

Daniel Fehr is one of the five youth who completed the 20 week program.

Fehr, 17, said he enlisted in the program to help others.

"You never know when something could go wrong, and it's always a good thing to be prepared," said Fehr.

CPR training and scenario based exercises keep the group of future lifeguards in the best physical shape.

Kenzie MacDonald, 16, is another swimmer who wanted to stay active in swimming.

MacDonald said they meet for a few hours every week, and once they are done they can be certified anywhere in North America.

Fehr and MacDonald agreed that the family centre has been offering a great line-up of programs for Inuvik.

Fehr added that he wanted to see more of the pool in the high school curriculum as well.

"There are still some kids who can't swim, and there's no reason not to teach it," he said.

If you aren't eager to be a lifeguard, there are still many options for you at the centre, said instructor Stephanie Hendrie.

Hendrie was one of the first instructors at the centre, and remembers how the pool has evolved. "It used to be just a lot of public swimming," said Hendrie.

Now, programs are offered for all ages, from the very young to fitness programs for seniors as well.

Hendrie said there are many advantages to exercising in water because of the natural resistance. "It builds strength and flexibility which are both important for everyone."
