Stuck in ice

Yellowknife (Apr 05/06) - Workers in two trucks helping close the Tibbitt Lake ice road managed to get themselves out of trouble, but not before search and rescue was called in.

RCMP Const. Roxanne Dreilich said a pilot flying a small aircraft saw the pair around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, at which time they signalled to him that they were stuck.

Dreilich said because nightfall was approaching, the rescue was delayed until daybreak.

Through the night, however, the pair were able to walk to a nearby camp, secure an Argo vehicle and then pull the trucks out themselves.

"The helicopter did go out in the morning and saw the site where the vehicles had been," she said.

The ice road closed early last week.

"It is just not safe," Dreilich said.

Break and enters investigated

Seven businesses were broken into during the past week.

"No charges have been laid at this time," Dreilich said.

Several of the incidents are still under investigation and suspects have been identified.

The break and enters under investigation include:

  • The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, where a laptop computer was reported missing;
  • Breakaway Fitness centre, where a quantity of cash was missing;
  • Sunrise Real Estate, where a laptop was reported stolen;
  • Atco-Frontec, where nothing was reported stolen, but damage was done to the door;
  • NWT2000.com, where it has not been determined if anything was stolen; and,
  • An office on the third floor of Stanton Territorial Hospital, where a laptop and possibly a small amount of cash was reported stolen.

    Assault allegations, no charges

    Yellowknife RCMP received 235 calls for service during the week of March 28-April 3.

    During that time, there were 10 assaults reported and one assault with a weapon, said Const. Roxanne Dreilich.

    No charges have been laid.

    Man charged with stealing meat

    Yellowknife RCMP have charged a 39-year-old man with theft under $5,000 after he was accused of stealing meat from a grocery store. He will appear in territorial court at a later date.

    Drivers urged to use caution

    Drivers are being urged by Yellowknife RCMP to use caution when driving around the city.

    "Because of the spring weather, there has been a lot more children outside playing near the streets," said Const. Colleen Werrell.
