Pelly Bay (Apr 03/06) - A 20-year-old-man has been charged with first degree murder in the death of a five-year-old Kugaaruk girl.

Shawn Kayaitok is in custody and has been sent to Iqaluit. He will appear in front of the Nunavut Court of Justice on Monday April 3.

The girl's body was found in a small grey shed on the morning of March 10.

On March 24, residents gathered on the ill-fated spot, while children, let of school for the event, carried flowers and white crosses to adorn the shed.

A member of the victim's family spoke to the crowd.

The family member said that the community should move on and thanked everyone for their support," said hamlet employee Vince Ningark, who attended the service.

Father Bogdan Osiecki and a local elder also spoke during the service, which lasted about 20-30 minutes.

The body of the girl was found by searchers in the shed about 12 hours after her family had last seen her alive.

Three RCMP major crimes investigators were still in the community on March 30. They have interviewed more than 100 people about the killing.

"We are still in the community and we are still working hard on this case," said Staff Sgt. Doug Hardy of the Iqaluit RCMP. The RCMP member on duty attended the memorial service.

Letting the kids out of school to go to the service was a no-brainer for principal Sidney Rodnunsky.

"It was what people wanted to do, and we go with what the community wants. My own kids went," said Rodnunsky.

After the service, the kids returned to class. "We just came back, because we are like family here. We are a one rule school -- be nice -- and we just carried on," said Rodnunsky.
