Inuvik (Apr 28/06) - Almost three years ago, Maidie Anne Turner merged her creativity with her job at the post office.

She designed a new cancellation stamp, which is still used today.

Turner saw a flyer from Canada Post that suggested each office have its own stamp unique to the region.

"I knew I had a piece that might work as a stamp," said Turner.

The piece chosen by Turner was a print she had made five years ago, which symbolized the night, ice and midnight sun of Inuvik.

The painting was done in the print-making style, where each shape is cut out and stencilled with a brush.

The stamp has become popular with collectors, said Turner.

"People mail in requests for our cancellation stamps all the time," said Turner.

The collectors send in a self-addressed envelope with instructions on where they want the stamp marked.

"Once we mark the envelope, we just return the letter to sender," said Turner.

Turner's main medium is stained glass, which she has on display every year at the Great Northern Arts Festival.

"I've been dabbling in painting for the last few years," said Turner.

Print making and stenciling are some of the newer elements to Turner's artistic side.
