Yellowknife (Apr 28/06) - Walter Blondin received a permit to lease land for his proposed business expansion with Fort of the Forks Ltd. during last week's village council meeting held on April 18.

The company plans to build a 50-person executive camp, a fuel tank storage area and a parking area. Most of the clients are expected to be truckers.

The project, which is still in the planning stages, is expected to cost $10.8 million, said Blondin.

He said the camp will help keep truckers and heavy equipment out of the downtown core.

"We just want to have a good working relationship with the community on our project," said Blondin.

Rate change

Village council is considering recommendations to change the rates for the recreation centre.

The possible changes were brought forward by Andrew Hillaby, the recreation co-ordinator.

Suggestions include only allowing birthday parties in the community hall or upstairs conference room.

For birthday parties for ages 16 and under the rate would be $20 an hour for up to three hours before the previous daily fee is applied.

A similar system is suggested for funerals using the gym or community hall and kitchen.

The rate would be $40 an hour for up to three hours.

Further discussion on the matter will be continued by the council's recreation, parks and playground committee.

Feeling generous

In response to a request, council reduced the recreation centre's community hall fee by 50 per cent for the Kole Crook Fiddle Camp's March 22 feast and concert.

A number of councillors suggested that in the future, groups should have to apply for a discount before their event.
