Rankin Inlet (Apr 12/06) - Kivalliq residents will have another option for receiving their cargo this coming sealift season.

Nunavut Sealink and Supply Inc. (NSSI) and Kivalliq Marine Ltd. will work together to serve the Kivalliq with marine-cargo delivery from Churchill.

Waguih Rayes of Nunavut Sealink and Supply Inc. says the joint sealift effort out of Churchill with Kivalliq Marine Ltd. will definitely benefit Kivalliq communities.

A sealift schedule will be implemented this season for both sea-going ships and tug-and-barge services.

Kivalliq Marine will handle the ground-based portion of the sealift by receiving cargo in Churchill and working directly with Kivalliq customers.

Kivalliq Marine chief executive officer Grant Cool said NSSI will provide the marine portion of the service to meet the needs of sealift users in all Kivalliq communities.

He said customers can contact either company for information regarding the new service.

"Working together, the two companies will create a new environment for marine transportation in the region," said Cool.

"Our customers are the citizens and businesses of the Kivalliq, and they want to have a service which meets their specific needs and adapts to their requirements. "By working with a successful and reliable company like NSSI, we will be able to increase the number of sailings, maintain fair pricing and adapt quickly to changes in the market each season."

NSSI's Waguih Rayes said the new arrangement will benefit Kivalliq communities.

He said sealift users in the Kivalliq will have the benefit of true options with the start of the 2006 season.

"Not only should they be able to order their goods from wherever they prefer in Canada, but they shall have the option to ship them out of either port, Churchill or Montreal," said Rayes.

"Both ports will have the same carrier, under the same contract, and be based on a regular and reliable sealift schedule.

"The NSSI sealift schedule will be published soon for both ports of exit, and the 2006 carriage rates will also be made available shortly."
