Warm weather crime wave

Iqaluit (Mar 27/06) - Brazen thieves - who broke into eight homes in a single night - have been apprehended by the Iqaluit RCMP.

They have charged Qaqasiq Kudlualik, a 19-year-old Iqaluit resident, in connection with the break and enters. They have also charged a young offender for the same crime spree.

Late on March 20 and in the early hours of March 21, RCMP responded to eight separate break and enters in the city.

Along with the two people charged, they are still looking for a third suspect.

In a bulletin sent out to media outlets, the RCMP urged residents to lock their doors because, “the criminals have been boldly entering homes, despite the presence of the homeowners.”

Cold Arctic nights usually curtail the activities of wannabe criminals in March, but warmer nights mean more criminal activity, they say.

“It hasn’t been 40 below at night, so more people are outside,” said RCMP Const. Jimmy Akavak.

Akavak went on to explain that receiving phone calls about suspicious activity helps them out. He said a quick call gives their police dog a better chance of tracking a suspect.
