Tasty treats make the day at Caribou Carnival

Yellowknife (Mar 22/06) - The Caribou Carnival isn't just about fun and games, it's about tasty food, too!

The 51st annual Caribou Carnival will have Yellowknife's favourite hot and cold treats for carnival goers, promised co-ordinator John Dalton.

Bill Erasmus was checking out the 2005 Caribou Carnival events he wanted to participate in last year.

"We'll have the Sugar Shack making maple syrup toffee and cotton candy from the Yellowknife Polar Bear Swim Club," said Dalton.

He said food at the carnival is always popular. So popular, some vendors wanted to keep what they're bringing a secret to prevent others from bringing the same treats.

Dalton will be selling hot beef and ham on buns with onions. He said this item has sold very well in the past.

Chili, spicy sausages, and possibly fish chowder will also be offered this year with event staples like hot dogs and hamburgers: all the makings for a meal and dessert, said Dalton.

"I liked the caribou jerky," said Kevin Yestrau, who attended the carnival last year.

"The maple toffee is my favourite, but sometimes there's too much food," said Raquel Nuttall, another festival foodie.

Dalton has four vendors confirmed, but thinks more will sign-up closer to the carnival.

Most vendors will be people from town, with only one from Edmonton.

Vendors must have Health Promotions and Protection Office approve their set-up five days before the carnival.

The office works out of Stanton Territorial Hospital.
