LSD and ecstasy confirmed in Smith

Fort Smith (Mar 20/06) - An unwelcome milestone has been reached in the illegal drug trade in Fort Smith.

For the first time ever, a drug seizure here has turned up LSD and ecstasy.

"We had rumours of it being in the community, but we never had any proof until we made the seizure," said Sgt. Craig Seafoot of the Fort Smith RCMP detachment.

"We're not just dealing with crack cocaine and marijuana, we're now dealing with chemicals," Seafoot added, noting ecstasy is just starting to come north.

Along with about 30 tablets of ecstasy and 24 hits of LSD, the police seized about a pound of marijuana, THC (the concentrated active ingredient in marijuana), drug paraphernalia and cash from a Fort Smith residence on March 9.

The overall value of the seizure, including the money, is estimated at $6,000. As of last week, Seafoot said the investigation is continuing and no charges had been laid at that time.

The police have a suspect in the case.

Seafoot said the seizure was made with the assistance of information from community members.

Ecstasy is a synthesized stimulant which gained popularity as the drug of choice at mass parties known as raves several years ago.

LSD - Lysergic Acid Diethylamide - is often simply called acid, and is one of the most potent mood-altering chemicals.
