Iglulik (Mar 01/06) - An Iglulik man faces two counts of attempted murder and several firearms charges after a four-day standoff ended Monday evening.

An RCMP Emergency Response Team from Iqaluit and Yellowknife had been on the scene since early Friday morning, about six hours after the standoff began.

A man had barricaded himself inside a residence. Also in the home were a three-year-old boy, two-year-old girl and seven-month-old boy. A woman fled the house and called police from a neighbour's residence.

During the standoff, police say shots were fired at two community social workers. No one was hurt during the standoff. The man surrendered peacefully at about 9:17 p.m. Monday.

Police charged Theophile Akkuardjuk, 37, with numerous firearm related offences and two counts of attempted murder. He is now in custody and is scheduled to appear in an Iqaluit court March 3.
