Yellowknife (Feb 03/06) - The Yellowknife Family Centre is celebrating it's 10th Anniversary on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

The centre hosts an open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and is open to the public.

The centre has been open at its current location for the past three years, said program co-ordinator Ruth Adamchick.

"It's a great place, with lots of space to play," said Adamchick.

The centre had it's beginning as a toy lending library, offering services to families in the city.

A play centre is still one of the services being offered for the children, with a wide array of toys and other fun activities, like painting or reading.

The services aren't just bound by the walls of the centre.

Gym visits to Weledeh school are planned weekly, as well as stops to the Ruth Inch Memorial Pool.

The centre is also being used as a resource tool for new parents.

"There's a lot going on here," said Adamchick.

The facility currently has 120 families as members who can come and go as they please within working hours, said Adamchick.

Aside from the pizza dinner being offered for the open house, the timing was also Adamchick's idea.

"We wanted to host it in the early evening, so parents could stop in after work," said Adamchick.
