New charges added in Project Gunship

Yellowknife (Feb 03/06) - One of the suspects charged in connection with the Project Gunship drug sweep now faces weapons charges.

Larry Mak was originally charged with trafficking cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking and conspiring to traffic cocaine.

In court Tuesday, he had nine new charges were read out. He was one of nine Gunship suspects to appear in court that afternoon.

Mak's new weapons charges stem from Oct. 13, 2005, and include possession of a restricted firearm with readily available ammunition; improperly storing a firearm without reasonable precautions; defacing the serial number on a firearm; possession of a stolen gun and possession of a firearm without a licence.

The weapons named in the charges were a Norinco NP 29 handgun and a .358 Magnum revolver.

Mak was also charged with possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Mak will reappear in territorial court on Feb. 28.

He and Colin Cleveland were jointly named in a charge of unlawful storage of a firearm, a shotgun. Cleveland also faces a count of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Cleveland will reappear in court Feb. 7 for a variation of application and again on Feb. 28 for election and plea.

Sandra Gellenbeck, charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and conspiracy to traffic cocaine along with four counts under the Motor Vehicle Act, had her matter set over until Feb. 28.

Michael Fraser, charged with conspiracy to traffic cocaine, will again appear in territorial court Feb. 14.

Leonard Haynes, 23, was fined $500 plus a 15 per cent surcharge on one count of driving while suspended, stemming from an incident on Aug. 5, 2005. A previous charge of uttering threats was withdrawn.

Haynes also entered a plea of not guilty and elected trial in territorial court to one count of trafficking cocaine; possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and conspiring to traffic cocaine. He will reappear in court Feb. 28.

Chandra Prakashan Mudaliar elected territorial court judge alone after entering a not guilty plea of conspiring to traffic cocaine and one count of trafficking cocaine.

He will appear Feb. 28 to have a trial date set.

A preliminary inquiry will be held March 29 for Mudaliar.

Philip Mullins elected trial by territorial court judge after entering a not guilty plea to trafficking cocaine; possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking; conspiring to traffic cocaine; trafficking marijuana and three counts of uttering threats.

Hoa Hien Ngo pleaded not guilty to one count of conspiracy to traffic cocaine and elected trial by territorial court judge.

Ngo, who requested a Vietnamese or Cantonese interpreter, will return to territorial court Feb. 28 to set a date for trial.

Dan Vermeulen, charged with one count of conspiring to traffic cocaine, was given until Feb. 14 to seek counsel.

Kan Sui (Ken) Wong, who had previously pleaded not guilty to five counts of conspiracy to traffic cocaine, will reappear in court Feb. 28.
