Wilke is the name, dairy is his game

Yellowknife (Feb 01/06) - Making sure that the milk is always fresh is a job for responsible people. It's Leslie Wilke's job at Extra Foods.

"I'm just a stock clerk," said Wilke. "But I spend most of my time in the dairy coolers."

Starting his day with unloading fresh eggs, and re-shelving yogurt and milk, Wilke said the days go by quickly.

"I have three boys at home," said Wilke. "They're my life, and I spend lots of time with them."

Wilke only works six hours a day during the week, so he can be home when his kids come home after school.

"It's during the weekends that I get really busy," said Wilke.

If any departments get short-handed, Wilke is always ready to offer his services in other locations in the store.

"I'm pretty versatile," said Wilke.

He said he is very happy with his job, because of the flexible hours.

His oldest son celebrated his birthday on a recent Saturday, and Wilke's supervisor gave him the time off to spend the day with his sons.

"It was a great party," said Wilke.

While his sons enjoy spending their time bowling or at the pool, Wilke admits that his work takes a lot of strength from him.

"When the boys are swimming, I'm usually just relaxing in the hot tub," said Wilke.

Another perk of his job would be meeting people, and seeing familiar faces in the store.

"Everybody buys groceries," said Wilke. "So I meet a lot of people here. It's nice to see them outside of the store as well."

With a good atmosphere, great co-workers and good hours, Wilke said he's very happy with where things are in life. He also had some "fresh" advice for anyone looking for the best selection of eggs.

"There isn't much of a trick to eggs," Wilke said with a laugh. "Just don't buy the cracked ones."
