A man of many hats

Fort Simpson (Feb 10/06) - From cribbage tournaments, to family violence awareness week and anything in between, planning special events is what Aaron McNab likes to do best.

As the executive director of the Deh Cho Friendship Centre in Fort Simpson, paperwork is what McNab sees the most of, but in between he is the guiding force for many of the centre's events.

"My specialty is more looking after community events."

McNab can often be found organizing youth talent shows by himself. Working on short-term event projects helps provide some variety in the job, said McNab.

But being the executive director involves wearing many different hats and a lot of responsibility.

"I try to provide direction," he said.

McNab has to ensure the wide range of programs the centre offers run smoothly.

There is always something happening at the Friendship Centre.

It's hard to keep track of how many people come though the centre in just one week, said McNab. Many of the programs have their own core groups of participants and other people join in.

McNab also has to keep tabs on what the various groups at the centre are planning. Impressively, he can rattle the list off.

Currently, the justice committee is planning a Valentine's Day pancake breakfast, said McNab. Tanya Hardisty, the co-ordinator for the urban multi-purpose aboriginal youth centre's initiative, is finishing the organization for the pre-ordered Valentine's Day packages of chocolates and flowers.

One of the bigger upcoming events is the re-opening of the youth centre under the new title of the Family Cultural Centre. To help things go smoothly, McNab is making sure funding and support staff are provided. He is also working to co-ordinate programming so it won't overlap.

Keeping track of everything that is happening doesn't seem to be a problem for McNab.

"It's just a matter of trying to concentrate on one thing at a time," he said.

Despite having some hectic days and juggling responsibilities, McNab said working at the Friendship Centre is rewarding.

"Helping people is what it comes down to," said McNab.
