Mail carrier promises cheques will be on time

Sanikiluaq (Jan 09/06) - Canada Post promises Sanikiluaq residents won't be waiting on their child tax credit cheques in the future.

There were three reasons why the cheques - mailed on Dec. 13 - didn't arrive in the hamlet until Dec. 30, said Canada Post spokesman John Cains.

"One was a weather issue. In another case, we were bumped from a flight for food mail," said Cains.

A factor Canada Post can control completely is the route the mail takes, and they have changes in store for that.

"We are re-routing the mail. There were some routing issues through Montreal," said Cains.

After a meeting of Canada Post's Northern services team, the Sanikiluaq mail will be going through Kuujjuaq instead of Montreal.

"We don't want this to happen again," said Cains.

The first test for the new routing is immediate. GST rebate cheques were issued on Jan. 5.
