Council Briefs: Feeling generous

Yellowknife (Jan 20/06) - Fort Simpson's village council has donated to three groups that sent in formal requests.

After some debate over what should be given, the Fort Simpson Men's Recreation Hockey Association was granted 50 per cent off their ice rental costs for the rec hockey tournament.

"Think of the economic benefits for the community," Mayor Raymond Michaud said in favour of the donation.

The Fort Simpson Curling Club will receive $150 towards the Merchant's Mixed Curling Bonspiel. Two hundred dollars is also going to support RCMP Cpl. Al Shepherd, who is representing the Northwest Territories in the National Curling Championships in Calgary.

Out to vote

Rita Cazon came into the village council meeting to announce that 43 people voted at the advance polls for the liquor plebiscite. This number sets a new record for advance poll attendance.

Street names

Letters will be written to both Nogha Heights and Rowe's trailer park to ask if they would like to name their streets.

The decision came after Coun. Tom Wilson suggested the roads in the two areas need street names. Coun. Norm Prevost noted that one road is only an access road to a trailer park.

The village would pay for both the street signs and their installation.

Lost position

Council is conducting further investigation into the transfer of the fuel operations co-ordinator position from Fort Simpson to Yellowknife.

Councillors were unsatisfied with the answer that MLA Kevin Menicoche received on the issue from Public Works Minister Floyd Roland.

"We believe Mr. Menicoche was provided with wrong information," said Coun. Tom Wilson.

"I think this position should come back to Fort Simpson, bottom line," said Coun. Betty Hardisty.
