Iqaluit (Jan 16/06) - At least two wolves - one white, the other grey - have been spotted in several locations around Iqaluit during the last few weeks.

Wolves have been spotted near the sewer lagoon, the dump, North 40 Road, Apex, the middle school "all over," said conservation officer Alden Williams.

"There are no packs, these are all single wolves."

Two wolves have been shot so far this winter, one by a hunter and the other by a wildlife officer.

There have been no reported wolf attacks in Nunavut, said Williams.

Regardless, it is important to use caution if encountering a wolf.

"Walk away, go away, don't get closer to get a better look, and then call the Wildlife Office."

During the last couple of years wolf sighting have become more common in Iqaluit.

Last year seven single wolves were shot nearby the city.

Before Christmas one polar bear was sighted near Upper Base in Iqaluit by a bylaw officer.

"It hasn't been back," said Williams.

On average, over the last four years there has been one polar bear sighting in or around Iqaluit.

Williams gives the same advice when dealing with polar bears as he does with wolves.

"Walk away, don't get closer."
