Woman moves North for work

Yellowknife (Jan 13/06) - Laura Lloy has only been here for six months, but says she likes the people of Yellowknife.

"I've met a lot of people," she says. "They're very nice and laid back."

Lloy and her husband of eight years were looking for opportunities that Nova Scotia couldn't provide. Her brother and sister, who live and work in Yellowknife, recommended the city.

Her sister is a nurse, while her brother works for the government.

As the manager of Canada Post's kiosk in Shopper's Drug Mart in the Panda Centre, Lloy is also the mother of two small children.

Her eldest child is Brody, age four, and Xavier, who is almost two.

She's been working at the post office for four months. Before she moved North, she was a stay-at-home mom, but had more than five years experience working in pharmacies.

While Lloy still misses Nova Scotia, she says "it feels like home because there are so many Maritimers here."

When asked what's the best part about moving to Yellowknife, she says "it's all good."

The busiest part of Lloy's day is during around lunch time, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. As for the Christmas rush, she says it was busy, with hundreds of packages being sent and received.

She says she and her husband John plan to stay in Yellowknife for at least five years.
