Yellowknife (Dec 16/05) - Police are searching for two men after a gunpoint robbery Monday evening, and warn the suspects are armed and dangerous.

Details of the robbery are still unclear, but police said the suspects approached a man in a downtown alleyway brandishing a hand gun.

After threatening his life, the suspects - one of them wearing a black ski mask - made off with $187 in cash.

Armed robberies, especially those with guns, are rare in Yellowknife, and RCMP Sgt. Darcy Fleury said residents should not be afraid to walk downtown.

"This is the first case we have heard of in quite some time. I don't even know when the last one was," he said.

According to Yellowknifer records, the last gun-related robbery came in 2003 when a man walked into an Old Town art gallery with a hunting rifle and stole more than $3,000.

Wednesday, police released a description of the two suspects to media outlets.

Police describe one suspect as a white male, between 6' and 6'3", with a 3/4 length black winter coat, dark blue jeans and dark hiker boots and gloves. The other was Native and 5'4" to 5'6" with a blue, bomber jacket bordered along the bottom with a white stripe, a white and black bandanna, navy blue or black tuque, nylon pants and white sneakers.

Fleury could not say precisely when or where the robbery happened. Police are also not sure why the victim waited a day before coming forward.

RCMP Const. Damon Werrell said both suspects are considered "armed and dangerous" and should not be approached.

He asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers or the Yellowknife RCMP detachment.
