Yellowknife (Dec 16/05) - A driver who ran into a pedestrian in downtown Yellowknife, sending the man hurtling 10-15 feet backwards, was fined $400 Tuesday in territorial court.

The man, a corrections officer, was driving his Dodge Ram pickup truck through the intersection of 50th Street and 50th Avenue when he struck the pedestrian, who was crossing on a green light Sept. 2.

The 32-year-old man drove the victim to Stanton Territorial Hospital and waited there for several hours, said Crown prosecutor John MacFarlane. The pedestrian suffered a broken arm.

During his court appearance Tuesday, the man pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention.

MacFarlane estimated the man was travelling 10-15 kilometres an hour when he hit the pedestrian, who saw the truck coming towards him and put up his arms to cushion the blow.

The driver told police the sun was in his eyes when he collided with the pedestrian.
