Voices raised in song

Yellowknife (Nov 04/05) - Students from the Mildred Hall School Choir sang at the Calvary Community Church coffee house last Friday evening.

The 16 singers performed a rendition of Michael Row Your Boat Ashore and a version of This Land is Your Land with a couple of verses written about the North by choir director and music teacher Robert Popson.

"It's a pretty busy schedule up to Christmas holidays," Popson said.

The choir, which includes more than 50 singers from Grade 3 to Grade 8, will sing some peaceful music at their school's Remembrance Day ceremonies next week and on Dec. 1 at the City Hall tree lighting ceremony.

Groups of 15 to 24 choir members will visit seniors' homes and the hospital in early December to brighten the spirits of the residents and patients before performing at the school's concert Dec. 15.

"It's a very open choir," Popson said. "We're pretty high on the idea of community spirit. I hope the students get a personal joy from being part of the choir and I hope they all realize they're doing good for whichever groups we're performing for."
