Inuvik remembers the 'Year of the Veteran'

Inuvik (Nov 18/05) - This Remembrance Day marked the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and to observe the sacrifice of veterans and those currently in military service, the federal government declared 2005 to be the Year of the Veteran.

According to Veterans Affairs records, more than 116,000 Canadian soldiers have given their lives in service to this country.

Since the Korean War, more than 100 soldiers have died in combat and peacekeeping missions.

At the moment, there are 15 veterans of the First World War (1914-1918) alive.

All are more than 100 years old. The average age of a veteran from the Second World War (1939-1945) is 83.

Veterans of the Korean War average 73 years of age.
