Inuvik (Nov 11/05) - October was a busy month for Inuvik RCMP, as a rash of break-ins and other crimes occurred, several of which remain unsolved.

According to police, on or between Oct. 7 and Oct. 10, the gate to the Inuvik Airport radar site was damaged as a result of Ounknown persons' discharging a firearm at the gate and lock securing the perimeter.

The site is located near Airport Lake, approximately 10 km south of Inuvik. There are still no suspects in this matter, say police.

Oct. 10 saw a break-in committed at a warehouse on King Road. Various items, including cases of chocolate bars, beef jerky and assorted beverages, were stolen. Police say thieves forced their way into the building and "a vehicle of unknown origin" was used to make off with the loot.

Inuvik RCMP have several suspects but there have been no arrests at this time.

The following day (Oct. 11) a backpack and its contents were stolen from a van parked outside the Eskimo Inn on Mackenzie Road.

While the backpack and several items were recovered, a Nokia cellular phone was never found.

Also on Oct. 11, a boat docked at the edge of the Mackenzie River, close to the Northwest Territories Power Corp., was set ablaze. Shortly before the incident, three youths were seen near the boat, however, police say their identities are unknown.

Two break and enters were reported to police on Oct. 12. The first occurred at the Canada Post office in the early morning hours, before 5:30 a.m. Police say the individual(s) responsible entered through a rear access door and proceeded to gain entry to the mail distribution area by smashing a hole through an interior wall.

The second break and enter happened at a residence on Franklin Road that same afternoon, between 1 and 3:30 p.m. Several items were stolen, including a Canon 35 mm camera, an Hitachi DVD-recordable camcorder and a diamond ring.

Police say all cases are still under investigation and ask that if anybody has information regarding these crimes that they please contact the Inuvik RCMP detachment.
