Country legend comes north

"Country music to me is heartfelt music that speaks to the common man. It is about real life stories with rather simple melodies that the average person can follow. Country music should speak directly and simply about the highs and lows of life. Something that anyone can relate to." - George Jones

Yellowknife (Oct 03/05) - Less than two weeks remain until country superstar George Jones will play his first ever concert in the Territories.

Jones will appear on the Yellowknife Multiplex stage on Oct. 16. Late last week, Wolfpack Productions had fewer than 400 of the 2,300 seats left.

Fans from across the NWT are travelling to the capital for the event, said Garry Hubert of Wolfpack Productions.

"We have people coming in from Tulita, Tuk, Inuvik, Lutsel K'e, McPherson, Simpson, Hay River, Rae - all over," he said.

At 74, Jones still headlines 100 concerts a year.

His 2005 Canadian tour features nearly 30 performances from coast to coast.

He first hit the charts back in 1955 with Why, Baby, Why and earned Grammy awards for He Stopped Loving Her Today and Choices.

Jones was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992.

Along the way he has recorded duets with everyone from Ray Charles to Keith Richards.0310
